historic evansville In 1836, the first people to come to the Evansville area, were called Yankees.
The Yankees named the area "The Grove" because of a large stand of timber a little northwest of the settlement. The town was first platted in 1855, almost 15 years after the Yankees first settlement. Unlike most other growing communities, Evansville's first buyers were settlers, not speculators. The planned pattern of growth in Evansville provided an element of stabilty in the community. In the last decade of the 19th century, the town's population grew to nearly 1900 people. By 1920, most of the building in the historic district was complete. |
